Definition
There are circumstances that may prevent a tooth from achieving its complete movement as designed in the setup. Overcorrection is a method for providing sufficient pressure on a tooth to move it into the optimal position, and commonly recommended by experienced clinicians.
Uses
Overcorrection is commonly needed for these types of movements:
- Rotations
- Labial-lingual alignment
- Expansion
- Extrusion
How to…
Overcorrection is only applied when requested by the clinician at the time of the original submission or with a revision during or after treatment. Application of overcorrection in the setup requires the clinician to tell the technician specifically:
- Which teeth to “overcorrect”
- Which direction to move the tooth with the overcorrection
- How much total overcorrection in mm or degrees (this will determine the number of additional aligners will be needed)
How much overcorrection can be estimated in 3 steps?
- For rotations – approximately 6 – 9 degrees
- For labial-lingual – approximately 0.6 – 0.9 mm
- For expansion – 0.6 – 0.9 mm
- For extrusion – 0.6 – 0.9 mm
